LGBT conservatives call DeSantis video homophobic

The “DeSantis War Room” Twitter account released the video Friday on the last day of June, LGBTQ+ Pride Month. The video includes footage of Trump at the 2016 Republican National Convention in which he states that “I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens.” Trump had promised protection against terrorist actions weeks after a shooting attack at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, was the deadliest in US history to that point.

The video also highlights “LGBTQ Supports Trump” T-shirts being sold by the former president’s campaign and the president’s past comments that he wouldn’t mind if Caitlyn Jenner, the former Olympic decathlon specialist who came out as a transgender woman in 2015, used either the men’s or women’s bathrooms in Trump Tower and that he would support transgender women one day participating in the Miss Universe pageant, which he co-owned when he made those remarks.

The video changes suddenly, accompanied by loud dark music and images of DeSantis, the Florida governor who is trailing far behind Trump in the polls with a view to winning the Republican presidential nomination for the 2024 elections.

The video includes media headlines that DeSantis signed into law “the most extreme series of anti-trans laws in modern history” and a “draconian anti-trans toilet initiative.” The video includes images of muscular men with bare chests and several Hollywood actors, including Brad Pitt, wearing leather masks in the movie “Troy.”

“To wrap up ‘Pride Month,’ let’s hear from the politician who did more than any other Republican to celebrate it,” DeSantis’ campaign tweeted.

The video drew immediate criticism from prominent LGBTQ+ Republicans such as Log Cabin Republicans, which describes itself as the “largest Republican organization dedicated to representing LGBT conservatives” in the nation.

“Today’s message from the DeSantis campaign’s war room is divisive and desperate. Republicans and other common sense conservatives know that Ron DeSantis has alienated a swing state and young voters,” the group said in a tweet. He added that DeSantis’ “attempts at extreme speech” “have ventured into homophobic territory.”
