Life sentence for perpetrator of Michigan school shooting

MIAMI.- American teenager Ethan Crumbley, accused of killing in a shooting to four classmates from his high school in the state of Michigan in November 2021, he was sentenced this Friday to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Oakland County Judge Kwamé Rowe gave him the maximum sentence for a “true act of terrorism” which resulted in the death of four Oxford High School students, Hana St. Juliana, 14 years old; Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16, and Justin Shilling, 17.

Rowe highlighted that the teenager, who was 15 years old when he carried out the shooting, forced his partner Shilling to kneel before killing him. “That is an execution: that is torture,” he said, as reported by NBC News.

Crumbley thus becomes the first minor to receive this type of sentence since the United States Supreme Court stated in a ruling that two minors convicted of murder when they were 14 years old could not receive a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

“I’m really sorry for what I’ve done and what I’ve taken from you. I can’t repay you, but I can do everything I can in the future to help other people and that’s what I’ll do,” Crumbley said before receiving the sentence, as reported. the CNN network.

Could the shooting be avoided?

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office claimed that the teenager’s parents ignored “the warning signs” and did not act despite knowing some of their son’s “disturbing” preferences, such as torturing animals or watching videos of extreme violence.

The parents, who were initially declared fugitives until their arrest, gave him the semi-automatic pistol with which he fired the shots and ignored the school’s warnings about their son’s erratic behavior.
