Through a joint statement, Liga MX and Major League Soccer (MLS) released the groups for the Leagues Cup 2023. After having formalized the unprecedented tournament in October of last year, the first matches in which all the clubs from Mexico and the United States will participate (plus those from Canada that play in the MLS) were finally defined: 47.

In total, they will be 15 groups made up of three teams each. In turn, the groups were grouped into four different regions: Central, South, East and West (the latter will have three groups and not four as in the rest of the cases). In the case of Liga MX, the clubs were classified based on the sum of points in the 2022 Clausura and Apertura tournament; under this criteria America was ranked first and will face the worst performing teams in America.

The championship will take place between on Friday, July 21 and Saturday, August 19 2023, that is, between the Clausura and Apertura tournaments in the case of Mexican soccer and will have the support of Concacaf. The configuration for the primary edition is 47 participants (from Mexico, the United States and Canada) divided into 15 groups of three members each, of which the best two will advance to the next round.

“The arrival of Leagues Cup 2023 means a before and after in history not only of the sport of our region, but of world football. In addition, our confederation endorses and makes the tournament official, which will strengthen competition for the 47 clubs that make it up. For Liga MX it means getting closer to our great and growing fans in the United States for a whole month,” he said. Mikel Arriolapresident of the Mexican league, in October 2022 when they presented the tournament.

During the group stage, there will be no draws. As explained by the authorities, if the 90 minutes end with the score even, one point will be automatically distributed to each team involved, but victory will be decided in a penalty shootout. The winner of this will be awarded an extra point. In this stage, each club will play two games.

The next round to play will be the round of 32. This will be configured by the best two classifieds of each sector, that is, 30 squads. The two remaining places will be allocated directly to a club from the MLS and the Liga MX, each one. In the case of the American league, it will be assigned to the champion of the 2022 cup and by the Mexican, to the group that adds the most points in the soccer year (Closing 2022 and Opening 2023).

From this, the course will be the usual: round of 16 with eight games, quarterfinals with four, semifinals with two and later the game of the final, although the duel for the third of the tournament is also contemplated. This because the first three will have direct access to the Concacaf Champions League (2nd and 3rd places will go to the group stage and the champion directly to the knockout stage).
