Johnny Depp’s passage on Wednesday May 17 at the Cannes Film Festival, remember, was not without controversy. He went to present ‘Jeanne du Barry’, where he has his first leading role since his trial for gender violence with his ex-wife, the model Amber Heard. The film narrates the life of King Louis XIV’s mistress, a role played by Depp and which earned him a huge seven-minute ovation at the end of the screening.

The controversial presence of Depp in Cannes had to be explained by the director of the contest himself, who assured: “In my life I only have one rule: respect the freedom of thought and expression and the legal framework. If Johnny Depp had been banned from acting in a movie or if his movie had been banned, now we would not be talking about it here (…) I am the last person who should enter the subject, because if there is someone who did not show the slightest interest in a trial that was notoriously public, it was me. I do have an interest in Johnny Depp as an actor.”

Well, almost two weeks after the premiere of ‘Jeanne du Barry’ in Cannes, it has been the daughter of Johnny Depp, the actress and model Lily-Rose Depp (France, 1999), who has spoken about the seven-minute ovation for her father. And, in the face of all the rumors that indicate that she is in conflict with him, she showed herself to be a very proud daughter.

In statements to ETLily-Rose Depp indicated that “I’m super happy for him. I’m super excited. And it’s amazing that we can do projects that we’re super proud of.”

For her part, Lily-Rose Depp also went to Cannes (and was greatly applauded) to screen the first episodes of ‘The Idol’, a new HBO Max series Created by Sam Levinson (‘Euphoria’) and The Weeknd. Depp plays Jocelyn, a pop star who is recovering from a psychotic break after the death of her mother. As she tries to pull off a new album and tour, she goes to a seedy Hollywood club where she meets Tedros (The Weeknd), a cult leader who has big plans for her.

Depp also explained to ET what his time at Cannes was like. “Unbelievable. It felt like a beautiful celebration and culmination of everything we’ve been through together, and the beautiful process of creating the show and this family. It was really, really nice to see the reaction and everything, and to finally be able to share with the world something we’re all really proud of.”

The series, which premieres on Monday, June 5 on HBO Max (also in Spain) has been criticized for its nudity, its sex scenes and its stark description of the music industry. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference, he also expressed his opinion on the matter. “It’s always a little sad and heartbreaking to see bad and untrue things said about someone you care about that you know doesn’t,” she said. “It didn’t reflect my experience at all.”
