Catherine Deneuve enters the red carpet

Cinema legend Catherine Deneuve arrives on the red carpet. The actress, who starred in Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Palme d’or 1964, illustrates the poster for the 76th Cannes Film Festival. The poster is inspired by an image from the film set The chamade by Alain Cavalier, released in 1968.

“Jeanne du Barry” by Maïwenn divides

The French press has already been able to discover Jeanne du Barry by Maïwenn, the opening film of Cannes 2023. She is generally enthusiastic. “Shattering” according to The JDDJeanne du Barry is a complete show”, for Le Figaro.

Pour TeleramaMaïwenn’s fresco is “a mischievous and (…) sparkling tale”, “where historical realism and fantasy marry”. The Parisian estimate that Jeanne du Barry is the “first shock” of the festival: “(Maïwenn) has kept his passionate, inhabited, lively style”.

The cross is more moderate: if Maïwenn “manages to breathe modernity and freedom” into her story, her film suffers from a “classic invoice (…) slightly starched”.

Release finally shows itself to be more critical, denouncing “a huge company of histrionics in a cloud of powder and wigs” and a filmmaker who “pulls all the coverage to herself”.

Actresses castigate the red carpet for Depp and Maïwenn

“Shame”: a collective of actresses and actors, including Julie Gayet and Laure Calamy, criticizes the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, which rolls out “the red carpet to men and women who attack”, in reference to Johnny Depp and to director Maïwenn.

In a column published by the daily Releasethis collective also supports actress Adèle Haenel, who formalized her cinema stop a week ago to denounce a “complacency” of the 7th art vis-à-vis sexual aggressors.

“We are deeply indignant and refuse to remain silent in the face of the political positions displayed by the Cannes Film Festival”, explains this forum.

“By rolling out the red carpet to the men and women who attack, the festival sends the message that in our country we can continue to exercise violence with complete impunity, that violence is acceptable in places of creation”, adds the text .

The disputed return of Johnny Depp

First day and first controversy: the comeback of Johnny Depp, expected Tuesday evening on the red carpet for the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, arouses an outcry from feminists, who denounce the rehabilitation of a contested star.

Banned from American film sets since the trials that pitted him against his ex-wife Amber Heard against a backdrop of accusations of domestic violence, the 49-year-old actor returns through the front door, for the presentation of Jeanne du Barryby Maïwenn.

Depp was not convicted on the merits and denied any violence. He must climb the steps before the opening ceremony, during which the American actor Michael Douglas must receive an honorary Palme d’Or.

Asked about the choice of the opening film, the general delegate of the Festival, Thierry Frémaux, underlined his interest in Depp “as an actor”, whom nothing prohibited from filming, and whose performance is “extraordinary”. “I have only one conduct in life, the freedom to think, to speak, to act within the framework of the law”.

Chiara Mastroianni master of ceremonies

Chiara Mastroianni is the mistress of ceremonies for the opening night of the 76th Cannes Film Festival. The actress wishes to avoid the too formal dimension of the ceremony, she told BFMTV on Tuesday:

“I would like to succeed in doing something that is still simple and warm. Afterwards, you have to be careful, you must not become familiar either. The limit is very fine.”
