Introduction: The corona pandemic is behind us, it no longer determines our everyday life as much as it used to – fortunately! But many still feel the effects of a Covid-19 infection on their own bodies, because the symptoms of the so-called Long Covid can be very persistent. Petra Terdenge reports:

Narrator: Many of the Long Covid sufferers suffer from fatigue or headaches. In a quarter, the so-called “brain fog” occurs, i.e. fog in the brain. What that means, Dr. Achim Schneider from the pharmacy magazine:

    O-Ton Achim Schneider 14 sec.

“Those affected feel foggy and have trouble concentrating, for example. This can also lead to difficulties at work. For example, if you can no longer follow video conferences due to the brain fog and can no longer comprehend texts.”

Narrator: Why does the brain suffer so badly from the consequences of an infection that actually primarily affects the respiratory tract? We don’t know for sure yet:

    O-Ton Achim Schneider 20 sec.

“There are indications that the virus damages blood vessels throughout the body, which means that the brain is then less well supplied with oxygen and nutrients. There are also indications that the body’s own defense system triggers inflammatory reactions when certain immune cells migrate to the brain.”

Narrator: Those affected should first consult their family doctor to rule out other causes of the fog in the brain. Sufficient relaxation, regular sleep and a balanced diet often improve the situation. Also, the doctor can refer his Long Covid patients to a specialized clinic:

    O-Ton Achim Schneider 20 sec.

“In special Long Covid centers, stress control plays an important role. Patients learn there not to overstrain themselves physically and mentally and to find a balance between activation and protection. In general, doctors report that the symptoms are slowly but steadily decreasing.”

Moderation: Occupational therapy can also help against brain fog, writes the pharmacy magazine. The cognitive functions are trained, for example concentration and the ability to find the right words and to plan one’s own actions in a targeted manner.
