After the fire that took place on April 6, dozens of dogs and cats were affected and lost their homes

Last Thursday, April 6, a fire consumed part of the Wholesale Market of Mexico City, located in the mayor’s office iztapalapa. After the tragedy, a white balance was reported, although hundreds of merchants lost their source of employment. However, they were not the only ones affected, as dozens of dogs and cats were also stranded.

And it is that inside the market facilities lived several animals that were part of the community, which did not have owners, because they were cared for and fed by everyone. For its part, at the Central there is a shelter that provides temporary shelter and seeks to adopt dogs and kittens.

Meanwhile, the fire left several dogs and cats with health problems, while also taking away a space in which to live. For this reason, through social networks, the Temporary shelter of the Central de Abasto CDMX asked for help for the four-legged little ones.

“We just had a fire at the Central de Abasto and some of those affected were the puppies. Many puppies and cats from the community lived in this area; that is, everyone and no one”, was revealed through a video posted on TikTok.

Specifically, the person who spread the information and asked for help — known as Uncle Central— recounted the case of Peter. “Pedrito is an older adult and is one of those affected, since he was left without the people who fed him, who took care of him, because these people were also left without their livelihood, and like him, we also have several of all sizes and all ages,” he said.

Likewise, it was announced that the Central de Abastos dog and cat shelter team, in collaboration with the Civil Protection authorities, are working “at forced marches” in order to guarantee the best living conditions for the furry affected.

According to the video posted last Sunday, April 9, two things are needed —generally—: financial and in-kind support, with which it is intended to be able to cover the expenses of said pets, such as:

  • healings
  • Sterilization
  • Food

Likewise, extra things are sought, such as toys, leashes and other useful products for the care, transfer and feeding of dogs and cats. According to the post on TikTok, donations can be made to the account 4152313686929972 of the BBVA bank, in the name of Miriam Magana Rosales; However, the easiest way is to drop off the money and support directly to the shelter in person at the Central.

“All these puppies are going to be available for adoption along with the other dogs that we already had at the shelter of the Wholesale Market. the shelter is located next to the main entrance, on the right hand side (…) You ask for the civil protection area and they will guide you there”.

Meanwhile, another form of support requested was the not go to the area of the events because, although the fire was controlled since the early morning of Friday, April 7, something known as “deaf fire” is found in space.

“The place is in rubble, the floor extremely hot that even the boots melt, and when cleaning and picking up all this chaos there are still sparks. So, we want to prevent the fire from spreading again at all costs ”, was detailed in the video clip.

On the other hand, the head of the Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced this April 10 that of the 359 tenants affected by the fire, 183 have already been relocated to new places so that they can resume their commercial activities.
