The Lord of the Rings in video games is far from over and games are coming soon. This is what we know.
You like it Lord of the Ringsx? Good news. Today, as part of its financial report for the third quarter of 2022, the Embracer group, which now owns the intellectual property of the license, took the opportunity to take stock of the future of the saga in video games. Thus we can learn that five new games based on LOTR are in preparation.
5 games on the way, what to expect for Lord of the Rings?
Specifically 5 games are being produced by external game studios. They should currently be published by the end of March 2024. In other words, tomorrow.
During the quarter, Freemode completed the previously announced acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises. For Freemode, this acquisition has generated a lot of interest among internal and external partners for The Lord of the Rings IP across various media formats. There are currently five games in production by external partners that will be released in fiscal year 2023/24.
There is also a film in production by an external partner. Freemode continues to make selective key hires across various areas of its business to strengthen the organization.
Within the 5, we know in particular the action/adventure game Gollum from Daedalic Entertainment which was announced in 2019 and which was to be released in 2021 before being postponed to 2022 and finally 2023. But that’s not all since there is also a certain le Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, an exploration survival game in the famous mines in which we play only dwarves. The title should be released later this year on PC via the Epic Games Store.

There are therefore 3 unknown titles that we know nothing about. After Gollum and dwarves, we can imagine a game about elves or why not just a strategy game that fans have been asking for for many years. Finally, one could also think of the potential creation of an RPG since the universe would be perfect for the genre.
