Brazil.- Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was sworn in this Sunday for the third time to the Presidency of Brazil before Congress. His vice president Geraldo Alckmin was also sworn in.

Lula, who ruled Brazil for two terms between 2003 and 2010, defeated far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in October’s election, tipping the South American nation to the left.

In his first speech in Congress, the president pointed out that thanks to the democratic front he is back in power. “It has been a victory for democracy,” he asserted.

The leftist criticized the use of public machinery in the elections in a clear reference to the disinformation campaigns of former President Jair Bolsonaro. However, he praised the electoral authorities for ensuring fairness in the electoral process.

“Voters have never been so constrained by economic power and lies spread on an industrial scale. The courageous attitude of the judiciary was essential.”
