Overall dominating, Olympique Lyonnais took over Metz (2-1), this Saturday, during the 32nd finals of the Coupe de France. A success without convincing but important for the Rhone club.

Lukeba is involved in OL’s winning goal.

Laurent Blanc can breathe a sigh of relief. Despite overall domination, Olympique Lyonnais barely. But Olympique Lyonnais managed to win against Metz (2-1), this Saturday, during the 32nd finals of the Coupe de France. A cudgel victory for Gones who provided the essentials.

Lyon does not find the solution

Quickly dominating, the Lyonnais came close to opening the scoring on a free kick from Caqueret which hit the bar. Slowly but surely, the locals clawed back ground and sent a new shiver down Oukidja’s spine, delighted to see Dembl miss his point-blank recovery following a good serve from Tet.

As the minutes went by, Lyon became more and more insistent, taking advantage of Cherki’s technical quality to put continuous pressure on the opposing goal. It also took two decisive interventions by Oukidja to repel the ground strikes from Barcola and Tet. An unchallenged domination but still no goal for the Laurent Blanc band.

Metz believed in it

Upon returning from the locker room, Lyon finally broke the lock. After a shot on target close to hitting Kumbedi, Barcola took advantage of a poor reading of Alakouch’s game on a ball from Thiago Mendes to adjust Oukidja at the near post (1-0, 60th). A short-lived joy. A few moments later, Jallow unleashed a huge shot that hit the bar to deceive Lopes (1-1, 64th).

A goal that put doubt in the minds of Lyon. Until release. On a Cherki corner extended by Tagliafico, Lukeba placed a non-framed header… but deflected by Cand, who surprised his own goalkeeper (2-1, 77th). A very happy action that allowed OL to race towards victory. A short but very valuable success that sent Les Gones to the next round.

The score of the match: 6/10

A rather high match between two teams which did not close the game. The Messins can harbor regrets since they could have surprised their hosts, in full doubt, after the equalizer. For their part, the Lyonnais showed great things in the first period despite their fragility after the hour mark.

The goals :

– At 35 meters, Thiago Mendes sends a bell ball to Dembl, who misses his oriented control. The ball nevertheless touches the Lyon striker and escapes Alakouch, who sees Barcola leave on the left. After a good catch of the ball, the young winger unleashes a low shot to adjust Oukidja at the near post (1-0, 60th).

– Following a shot from Kouao repelled by Lyonnais, Da Silva clears the ball badly. At 20 meters, slightly to the left, Jallow unleashes a heavy strike with his left foot which hits the bar of Lopes, completely beaten (1-1, 64th).

– On a corner from Cherki hit from the left, Tagliafico is there to deflect the ball on Lukeba, who places a header in the area. The shot is off target but Cand, badly positioned, is there to inadvertently deceive his own goalkeeper (2-1, 77′).

Players’ NOTES

Maxifoot has assigned a score (out of 10) comments on each player.

Man of the match: Castello Lukeba (7/10)

A solid game from the Lyon central defender. He was very little worried by opposing attackers, winning most of his duels. It is he who is there to put his head in order to offer victory to his team, taking advantage of an unfortunate deviation from Cand.

LYONS :

Anthony Lopes (5): the Lyon goalkeeper had almost nothing to do. He is logically beaten on Jallow’s cannon shot, which is difficult to stop.

Sal Kumbedi (6.5): a good outing for the Lyon defender, who showed authority in his lane. He made some interesting climbs throughout the game and combined pretty well with Tet.

Sinaly Diomande (6): the Ivorian did the job. He also had no trouble repelling the timid Messin offensives. His duet with Lukeba worked well.

Castello Lukeba (7): read comment above.

Damien Da Silva (5): new left-placed, the central defender was one of the only players in his team in difficulty. It is he who badly repels the ball which Jallow takes advantage of to galize with a heavy strike. Replace the 72nd minute with Nicolas Tagliafico (not not).

Maxence Caqueret (6.5): captain of the day, the midfielder of Bleuets made an interesting copy. Close to opening the scoring with a free kick that hit the bar fifteen minutes into the game, he managed the midfield well thanks to his technical quality with several good openings forward.

Thiago Mendes (6.5): the Brazilian answered present. Solid in the impact, he secured the midfield well. The former Lille is also the origin of the opening of the score thanks to his opening towards Barcola.

Mathis Ryan Cherki (6): like his last outings, the Lyon playmaker has shown himself to be very determined as the origin of most of his team’s actions. Even if he lowered his foot on returning from the locker room, he was involved in the winning goal with his well-taken corner.

Tet (4): irregular, again and again. He was in sight after half an hour with a shot well captured by Oukidja. Non-existent or almost after the break.

Moussa Dembele (4): the Lyon striker has it all, or almost. He must still wonder how he could have missed the target on his point-blank recovery in the middle of the first period. Despite everything, his involuntary deviation on a very average control finally allows Barcola to be in a good position to open the scoring.

Bradley Barcola (6.5): a quality match for the young winger, who provoked a lot in his lane. After having forced Oukidja to a fine save before the break, he beat him with a powerful point-blank shot on the hour mark to launch his own. Replace the 72nd minute with Alexandre Lacazette (not not).

METZ :

Alexandre Oukidja (6): the Algerian goalkeeper was rather comfortable in pushing back the deadline for an hour against Barcola, Tet or even Cherki. He is dropped by his defense on both goals.

Sofiane Alakouch (3): a very difficult meeting for the former player of Nmes, who had a lot of trouble against Barcola. On the opener, the right side is completely picked up by misreading the trajectory of the ball on the center of Thiago Mendes. Replace the 61st minute with Koffi Kouao (not).

Ismal Traor (6): the former Angers player contained Dembl pretty well. The central defender left little space for the Lyon strikers, who struggled to find an opening in the middle.

Fali Cand (5): a rather correct meeting until this goal against his camp which weighs down his team definitively. A fatal mistake largely avoidable since Lukeba’s head could not find the frame.

Matthieu Udol (6): interesting defensively against Tet, the left-back was just offensively on his crosses in the box. A satisfactory service. Replace the 61st minute with Boubakar Kouyat (not not).

Arthur Atta (3): 18 lost balls, very often beaten in duels, unable to accelerate the game: the Metz midfielder has a hole in the wide widths.

Habib Maga (6): much more his advantage than Atta, the Ivorian has long managed to stand up to his opponents thanks to his good placement. He caused problems in Lyon circles in the duels. Replace 74th minute with Youssef Maziz (not not).

Lamine Gueye (4): the Senegalese winger made little contribution in this match. He never managed to shake up the Lyon side on his attempts to break through. Replace 74th minute with Sheikh Sabaly (no not).

Joseph N’Duquidi (4): the garnet midfielder was not very comfortable in this part. Beaten in the combativeness of the Lyonnais, he only too rarely managed to serve his attacking partners.

Ablie Jallow (6.5): the best Garnet on the lawn. Author of a superb goal with a heavy shot under the bar, the Gambian international was close to offering a decisive pass to Gueye on a fleeing cross in the crowd. The only one to have shaken up Les Gones in this part.

Georges Mikautadze (4): a day without for the former Lyon academy. His former partners at the training center had no trouble blocking him for an hour. Replace the 61st minute with Lenny Joseph (not not).
