Magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes northeast Japan without tsunami warning

A earthquake of magnitude 5.9 shook the northeast of Japan without triggering the alert tsunami nor was it reported on damages caused by the seism.

The tremor originated at 09:14 local time on Friday (00:14 GMT) off the coast of Aomori, to the northeast of the archipelago, with an epicenter about 20 kilometers deep, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The local media have not reported any damage from the quake or incidents in the local transport network or nearby nuclear power plants.

In several towns in Aomori and in the adjoining Iwate Prefecture, the earthquake reached level 4 on the Japanese scale, a maximum of seven and focused on measuring the agitation on the surface and in the affected areas rather than on the intensity of the tremor.

Japan stands on the so-called ring of Fireone of the most active seismic zones in the world, and registers earthquakes with relative frequency, so the infrastructures are designed to withstand tremors.
