Magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes northeast Japan without tsunami warning

tokyo.- An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 shook northeast Japan on Friday without the tsunami alert being activated or the damage caused by the earthquake being reported.

The tremor originated at 9.14 local time on Friday (0.14 GMT) off the coast of Aomori, northeast of the archipelago, with an epicenter about 20 kilometers deep, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The local media have not reported any damage from the quake or incidents in the local transport network or nearby nuclear power plants.

In several locations in Aomori and in the neighboring Iwate prefecture, the earthquake reached level 4 on the Japanese scale, of a maximum of seven and focused on measuring the shaking on the surface and in the affected areas rather than on the intensity of the tremor.

Japan sits on the so-called ring of fire, one of the most active seismic zones in the world, and registers earthquakes with relative frequency, so the infrastructures are designed to withstand tremors.
