The cast list of the television carnival show “Mainz stays Mainz, as it sings and laughs”. The editors of SWR, which is in charge this year, have now announced the participants, who will be live on Friday, February 17, 2023, 8:15 p.m. on the stage of the Electoral Palace in Mainz. The President of the session will again be Andreas Schmitt this year.

The political and literary Fastnacht traditionally plays a special role in Mainz. In the live broadcast she is represented by Johannes Bersch with his character “Moguntia”, Lars Reichow as the “anchorman of the carnival themes in the eleventh” and by the “newcomer” in “Mainz stays Mainz”, Bardo Frosch with his “Frog Protocol”. Florian Sitte, who shone in the role of Angela Merkel in earlier years, gives an insight into the private life of the retired chancellor this year according to the motto “Mum alone at home”.

The duo Christian Schier and Martin Heininger, Markus Schwalbach and Jürgen Wiesmann provide the typical Meenzer Kokolores. Thomas Becker and Kati Greule take aim at the sticking campaigns of the “Last Generation”. And then there are also important visitors: the English royal couple, played by Martin Krawietz and Johannes Bersch, are honored in the Electoral Palace in Mainz.

The best in each genre

In the musical opening of the session, Oliver Mager invites you to sing along with his “Meenz-Medley”; “Handkäs un sei Mussig” describes atmospherically what it’s like “at carnival” in Mainz; Thomas Neger and the Humbas set a highlight with their city and carnival anthem “Im Schatten des Doms”; the brothers Matthias and Andreas Bockius alias “Dobbelbock” hit the current mood in the carnival with the hit “Everything is good again”. The glamorous conclusion is formed by the Mainz court singers, traditionally accompanied by the MCV court ballet. Other dance performances come from the Ballet of the Fusilier Guard Mainz-Gonsenheim, the GCV Ballet and the show dance group “Rot-Weisse Funken” from Frickhofen. The band “Soundcheck” will provide the musical accompaniment.

“Our speakers are very well prepared and extremely motivated,” said the two responsible SWR editors, Günther Dudek and Norbert Christ, about the mood among the active members of the four carnival corporations involved: Mainzer Carneval-Verein (MCV), Mainzer Carneval-Club (MCC ), Gonsenheim Carneval Club (GCV) and Carneval Club Kastel (KCK). “They will approach the topics in a witty, cheeky, sharp-tongued and satirical manner. The prominent politicians in the hall must therefore be prepared for a lot – they will be properly read the riot act again.”

After touring the halls for the approximately three-and-a-half-hour live broadcast, the editors are certain that they have again found the best of the respective genre and at the same time the lectures that fit perfectly into the evening’s dramaturgy. Kokolores, dance, music and political-literary lectures will alternate with each other in the tried and tested way. This gives the viewers an exclusive insight into the television carnival with its skilful balancing act between traditional and modern elements.
