Man wanted for fatal shooting of Providence minor held without bail

The man wanted for the shooting death of a 17-year-old in Providence in July is in custody.

The Providence Police Department confirmed to WJAR Monday that 24-year-old Samuel Medina turned himself in to police on Thursday.

Medina is charged with first degree murder in the July 14 killing of Darnell Whitford.

The shooting took place near Dexter Street and Waldo Street.

Investigators said they believe Whitford was walking with a friend when a car pulled up and several people approached her. That’s when police say an argument broke out and a person shot Whitford at point-blank range before the people and the car drove off.

Whitford, a football player for the West Warwick Steelers, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later died.

Days later, Providence police issued a warrant for Medina’s arrest.

Online court records show Medina was arraigned Friday on various murder and weapons charges, including first-degree murder.

According to court records, Medina was charged with first degree murder; firing a firearm when committing a crime of violence, resulting in death; possession of a weapon without a license or permit; and shoot in a compact area.

Court records also showed that Medina had a criminal record. He was on probation at the time of the shooting after being sentenced in 2022 on felony driving charges.

He was arraigned on Friday and ordered held without bail.
