SPD leader Lars Klingbeil has spoken out in favor of helping tenants with inflation-linked rental contracts. “It’s a problem when rents also skyrocket due to price increases,” he told the Funke media group’s newspapers on Thursday. “A lot of people can’t just afford that.”

“I am counting on the fact that we will find solutions to this problem together in the coalition in the interest of the tenants,” Klingbeil continued. He contradicted Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP), who on Wednesday in the Funke newspapers had seen no “immediate need for regulation” of index rents.

The Green coalition partner is also calling for state intervention in index rents. “Inflation has risen so much that it will be a shock for many tenants when the increase comes,” said parliamentary group leader Katharina Dröge to the newspapers of the Funke media group on Monday.

So-called index rents link rent increases to the development of the general price level. With high inflation, as is currently the case, rents rise particularly sharply. In view of this, calls had been made to limit such leases or even to ban new ones. (AFP)
