Many of us are longing for the ninth installment in the Mario Kart series, but as long as the eighth sells like hotcakes in the sunshine, we’ll probably have to wait a little while longer. Now, Nintendo reports that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has passed more than 50 million copies sold: 53.79 million, to be exact.

In November last year, the game had sold 48.4 million copies, so in three months sales have been very good. It is noteworthy, however, that copies included in bundles with the Switch console are included in the statistics. The Wii U version of the game sold 8.46 million copies and other top-selling games in the series have sold as follows: Mario Kart Wii (37.38 million), Mario Kart DS (23.6 million) and Mario Kart 7 (18, 98 million).

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also the best-selling game for the Nintendo Switch with Animal Crossing: New Horizons in second place (42.21 million copies sold) and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (31.09 million copies). It remains to be seen if any Switch title even comes close to Mario Kart’s success!

Evil Luigi glares angrily at a paltry 50 million copies sold.
