Tired of ChatCPT texts? There is a variant called MarioGPT, capable of generating an infinite number of levels for the most famous of plumbers.

In Mario’s head, what could be his worst enemy? Bowser, who spends his life capturing Princess Peach? Or an artificial intelligence capable of creating an infinity of levels, always pushing its ability to survive further? Imagine that this AI exists, for the moment in an embryonic form: it is called MarioGPT, reports SlashGear in an article published on February 14.

The algorithm animating MarioGPT was trained on two Mario video games: Super Mario Bros. And Super Mario Bros. 2 — which allows him to have access to a maximum of elements to design levels quickly and with incredible efficiency (there are a few failures). On paper, it’s much easier than doing it yourself with the video game dubbed Super Mario Maker 2which allows you to take yourself for an architect.

It’s GPT, but with Mario levels

Attention, MarioGPT, evolution of GPT-2, is not as easy to use as ChatGPT. Artificial intelligence requires some programming knowledge to operate. We would like to be able to simply write ” Imagine the hardest Mario level ever created », but it is much more complex than that. The creators of MarioGPT — researchers — provide the instructions in this page posted on GitHub, and it requires Python 3.8 software to generate the code using text-based instructions. Of course, a single prompt can lead to a myriad of different results.

Here are some examples of prompts (with illustrations for each) :

  • “Lots of pipes, lots of enemies, few blocks, little height”
  • “No pipes, few enemies, lots of blocks, lots of height”
  • “Lots of pipes, lots of enemies”
  • “No pipes, no enemies, lots of blocks”

As you will have understood, MarioGPT is far from being a tool for the general public. In reality, it is more of an experiment that aims to prove the effectiveness of artificial intelligence capable of generating content. The conclusions of the creators of MarioGPT are encouraging, as pointed out their thesis : “ We’ve proven that MarioGPT can predict player interactions in generated levels, create varied playable environments, and reduce the need for outside interactions. The efficiency rate is 88%, we can read. But the room for improvement is immense, in terms of database (MarioGPT is based on only two games) and possibilities (what about 3D environments?).

The success of MarioGPT could convince some developers to use AI to make life easier in certain projects. Moreover, several people have already taken the fold: the studio behind High on Life used algorithms to integrate certain elements (dubbing, images), while this mod Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord allows you to start discussions thanks to ChatGPT. These tools could really prove relevant in the future, provided that they are well used and exclude any form of drift.
