Second Dinner Studios already said last year that a more competitively focused mode was on the way. This is coming at the end of January, and now the developer has shared more about how the mode will work.

Marvel Snap keeps getting more content.

In Battle Mode, two players compete against each other over several rounds. You can choose to play against friends or against random opponents in your region. Instead of replaying cubes, as in the standard mode, the goal is to reduce the opponent’s health to zero.

– Each player starts with ten health. Instead of cubes, you play for damage that the winner inflicts on the loser. If you can reduce your opponent’s health to zero, you win, explains design manager Kent-Erik Hagman.

The cards you play with are the same each round throughout the match. As Second Dinner points out, this game provides an extra layer of strategy, where you can both notice which cards the opponent is using, while at the same time you can surprise towards the end by keeping extra good cards.

In his blog post, Hagman also tells how the mode was developed through several rounds of testing and feedback. For example, so-called “High Stakes Rounds” – where you lose more health – begin in the fifth round, so that the matches should not last much longer than 20 minutes. The team also decided that you can’t deal more damage than you have health, so players can’t just “snap” into wild cloud if they’re about to lose.
