Mass fire in Houston after storms: Was lightning to blame?

HOUSTON – Space City was hit Wednesday night by a high-intensity thunder storm. However, what started as a night of inclement weather quickly turned into a nightmare for the residents of a two-story building.

At around 9:00 pm, the Houston Fire Department (HFD) responded to a fire at an apartment building, finding an intense fire consuming the structure.

The fire not only wreaked havoc in the affected building, but also spread to some 16 adjacent units, generating a large amount of smoke and destruction. According to HFD reports, moments before the fire there were lightning strikes in the area, which has led investigators to consider the possibility that lightning was the triggering cause of the disaster.

Fortunately, despite the magnitude of the emergency, only three affected people were reported. One firefighter and two residents were examined by the HFD for possible injuries, but neither required hospitalization. The quick response and hard work of the firefighters helped prevent a major tragedy.
