Mayor Adams restores education funding

Mayor Adams, along with David C. Banks, Chancellor of the New York Department of Education, and Keith Howard, Commissioner of the New York Department of Youth and Community Development, announced the restoration of funding for education in the city budget.

The primary objective of these investments of city funds, officials assured, is to continue supporting young people and families.

The announcements include $32 million to protect programming previously funded by temporary stimulus funds and $20 million to extend the city’s popular Summer Rising schedule.

Additionally, as a measure to combat COVID-19-related learning loss, Mayor Adams also announced a policy known as “Hold Harmless.”

This protects the initial budget allocations of New York City public schools for the 2024-2025 school year, so that they maintain stability.

He also mentioned another $75 million to keep schools safe from declining enrollment, so that school principals can proceed with certainty and continuity.

DOE Chancellor Banks said, “Our schools are not just places of academic excellence, but community centers, buildings filled with mentors and trusted adults, and classrooms dedicated to developing our city’s future leaders.”

He added: “I commend this administration for putting our students first, investing in essential programs like Summer Rising, restorative justice, mentoring, and teacher hiring. And by enforcing this “hold harmless,” the city is demonstrating our unwavering commitment to our school communities.

The mayor mentioned that this is possible thanks to his administration’s solid fiscal management and better expected revenues.

Tuesday’s announcement comes as the Adams administration and the City Council continue to negotiate the fiscal year 2025 budget.

In addition, the mayor also spoke of funding cuts in other areas of government, such as libraries.
