In recent days, nearly 500 gendarmes and 120 police officers have been sent to Mayotte as reinforcements to fight crime and illegal immigration.
The first reconnaissance mission took place in the afternoon of Thursday, April 20 for part of the security forces as reinforcements in Mayotte. About 500 gendarmes and 120 police officers have arrived from mainland France in recent days. Interventions in slums must begin Monday, April 24 at the latest for two months in the French department of the Indian Ocean. Many slums, built without authorization, could be dismantled and undocumented migrants deported for the most part to Anjouan or the Comoros, where they come from.
“We are not dogs”
In a village, residents prepare for imminent destruction. The authorities recently listed their makeshift dwellings with numbers. Some, resigned, pack their bags. Others, on the contrary, are determined to stay. “We are not dogs, we are not animals”, denounces a resident who arrived from the Comoros 25 years ago. She refused a three-month relocation offer. Law enforcement expect clashes in the coming weeks.
