In Mayotte, as part of Operation Wuambushu, a slum will soon be destroyed. A decision that plunges many families into total uncertainty. Faced with the situation, anger and violence could explode.
In Majicavo (Mayotte), this slum is called Talus 2. There are many in the department. Saturday, April 22 in the morning, a small poster announces its next demolition. “It is to destroy our property, our homes. And yet, there are people who have been there for 35 years“, laments Fatima Youssouf. This demolition is part of Operation Wuambushu.
anger rises
A woman, who has lived there for years, has packed her things, ready to leave. If life has never been easy in the middle of this heap of sheet metal, it brought a semblance of stability. Soufou does not know what will become of her and her children. “If we destroy our houses (…), the girls will stay at home, the boys will break up other people’s cars“, she worries. In the village, anger is germinating and the risk of a violent conflagration is palpable. “It will break loose“, sums up a man, who has heard young people talking about Molotov cocktails.
