Tire Nichols, a 29-year-old black man, died after being beaten when he was detained by five officers in the US city of Memphis, in the state of Tennessee.

After the dissemination of the video with images of the police beating, in addition to the “outrage and pain” expressed by President Joe Biden, protests broke out across the country.

“After listening carefully to the family of Tire Nichols, community leaders and uninvolved officers who have done a good job, it is in everyone’s best interest to permanently deactivate the SCORPION Unit,” the Memphis Police Department said in an official statement.
