Extreme mountain climber and author Reinhold Messner accuses the climate activists of the “last generation” of endangering democracy: “If things continue like this, we won’t have a war in a few years, but a civil war,” said Messner on the ARD talk show “maischberger”. With their forms of protest, the climate activists tried to “blackmail us. They are blackmailing democracy. We have to be careful that we save democracy,” said Messner.
Messner called for the consumption of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions to be reduced. Because “global warming is our fault,” admitted the climber. But he thinks the term “climate protection” is wrong: “You can’t protect the climate. The climate has been changing for millions of years,” said Messner. “Of course we should do something. But it is not that simple. It will take a long time if we achieve anything at all.”
