After laying off 11,000 employees last year, Meta may again cut additional positions. The bad news would be announced in March, after carrying out the performance evaluation of its employees.
The year 2023 began with massive layoffs at GAFAM, and it is apparently not about to stop. In November 2022, Meta laid off 11,000 employees, roughly 13% of its global wage force. More recently, Amazon announced a massive layoff of over 18,000 people for 2023 to cut costs. We now learn that Meta would consider a new wave of layoffs in March.
Further layoffs at Meta would once again reflect the economic situation facing GAFAM. Tens of thousands of people around the world have lost their jobs in recent months. For fight the economic downturn, the tech giants do not hesitate to lay off with a vengeance. We do not forget Microsoft which will part with 11,000 employees or Twitter which fired 7,500 following the arrival of Elon Musk.
Meta would announce a restructuring in the coming weeks
According to Financial Times, internal work at Meta has been reduced sharply as the company prepares to fire additional employees. The layoffs would be announced within a few weeks. Corporate restructuring expected to be revealed in March after employee performance appraisal. Indeed, CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself said Meta employees need to focus on efficiency in 2023.
Meta is far from alone in laying off workers en masse in recent months, but few companies have had a second wave of layoffs. Therefore, if Meta does announce a restructuring for the month of March, it would join the ranks of Amazon and others who have laid off more people than originally planned.
Finally, it should also be remembered that Mark Zuckerberg indirectly announced layoffs at Meta. In particular, he said that the company could become ” a slightly smaller organization by the end of 2023. The announcement of additional layoffs in the coming weeks would therefore not be surprising.
