Founded in 2006 in kyiv, 4A Games is at the origin of the Metro franchise whose last opus, Metro Exodus, released in 2019, was then ported to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Since then, the studio had confirmed to work on a new opus without further details. Directly affected by the war, the studio has just published a long newsletter in which he looks back on his situation and his future.
Despite the war, 4A Games continues to work on a new Metro
Although the headquarters are in kyiv, 4A Games also has premises elsewhere in Ukraine and Malta. Thus, despite the conflicts, the studio confirms that it was able to continue to work, with however some adaptations to the circumstances. Developers based in Ukraine indeed live from day to day, and are sometimes forced to seek shelter. In fact, if the previously announced projects are still relevant, and in particular a new opus of the Metro license, we will have to wait before learning more.
However, regarding its flagship license, 4A Games confirms changes related to events that teams have been facing for almost a year. The script direction should specifically evolve to bring the franchise’s recurring themes from a new angle. As a reminder, the latter started in 2010 with Metro 2033 follows the survivors of a nuclear war, refugees in the Moscow metro, the last known bastion of humanity.
The war in Ukraine made us rethink what kind of story the next Metro should tell. All themes of Metro – conflict, power, politics, tyranny, repression – have become part of our daily lives. So we embrace them and bring them into the game with renewed purpose.
A little surprise for PC gamers
To make their players wait, 4A Games also had something new to share. Metro: Exodus having been conducive to the creation of mods of all kinds, the developers wanted to make it easier for fans by opening the doors of the game engine to them. Thus, any owner of a PC version of the game, whether on Steam, Epic Games or GOG will be able to download a development kit free of charge to create and integrate mods or even standalone content for the game. This gift to the game community will no doubt allow us to wait before having details on the next game to come.
