Metromover closes throughout Saturday

MIAMI.- A free bus service will operate throughout all Metromover stations, closed on Saturday, February 10, due to work on the roof of the Miami Tower skyscraper in Downtown Miami, which includes the helicopter flight.

“Throughout Saturday the stations will be closed for safety reasons,” the county announced.

According to the cocado press release, Metromover users will be notified via service alerts, social networks and the GO Miami-Dade Transit app once the stations open for service.

“Miami-Dade is actively working to improve the Metromover, a free transportation system that operates seven days a week in the downtown Miami, Omni and Brickell areas and has been in service for more than 30 years.”

As part of Metromover Upgrade Project a possible future closure of the Inner Loop is being reviewed to significantly improve service and extend the life of the system.

The Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) will communicate key dates in good time. At the moment no long-term closure is planned.

DTPW recognizes the need for an aggressive approach to replacing and repairing these 30-year-old subsystems to ensure reliability and affordability.

As such, the Department began construction work to overhaul the Metromover system in July 2022.

The multi-year project includes improvements to the operating system and electrical components of the guideways. It also includes a complete overhaul of the central control center and an upgrade to the track switches.

Once this $150 million upgrade is complete, improvements to the Metromover system will include:

  • Improved system reliability, which will help reduce service interruptions.
  • Greater frequency of vehicles, which will reduce passenger waiting times.
  • Extension of the useful life of the system to another 30 years through the rehabilitation of the track.

Funding for the Metromover Upgrade Project comes from the People’s Transportation Plan (PTP) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
