The Government of Mexico confirmed the recapture of Ovidio Guzmán, son of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán Loera, after a strong security operation deployed at dawn on January 5 in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

This was reported by the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), Luis Cresencio Sandoval, at a press conference where he provided the details of the operations to find the drug trafficker also known as El Ratón. This, without allowing questions from the media or delving into other details such as other arrests, reports of damage, injuries or deaths.

In this sense, the military confirmed that the drug trafficker was transferred from the point of his arrest to Mexico City (CDMX) in aircraft of the Mexican Air Force (FAM). Once in the capital, Guzmán López was sent to the facilities of the Specialized Prosecutor for Organized Crime (FEMDO) to determine his legal status.

This is how they captured Ovidio Guzmán
The capture of Ovidio Guzmán López derived from the reconnaissance and surveillance work carried out six months ago “in the area of influence of the criminal group” by the National Defense.

In this way, explained Luis Cresencio, on January 5 the Armed Forces (FFAA) and the National Guard (GN) identified armed personnel aboard pickup-type units in Culiacán. In view of this, security fences were established, but the military elements were the object of direct aggression by the armed subjects in an attempt by the federals to establish dialogue.

The military responded to the attacks under “a defense plan”, and it was then that Ovidio Guzmán was identified among the attackers in possession of exclusive weapons of the Mexican Army and made himself available to the federal authorities to transfer him to the Mexican capital.

In response to the capo’s seizure, members of the cartel cells carried out 19 drug blockades and armed attacks in various points of the Sinaloan capital, highlighting those registered at the Culiacán International Airport and the Military Air Base number 10.

He also mentioned that all the accesses to Culiacán were blocked: four of them heading to Los Mochis and two more at the exit to Costa Rica, Sinaloa. Finally, Luis Cresencio affirmed that there are still records of aggressions in the entity, for which the actions by all the institutions will continue to restore public order and peace.

It should be remembered that the Government of Sinaloa urged the population not to leave their homes while the authorities withdrew the attacks resulting from the apprehension of Ovidio Guzmán. In this sense, school classes and activities were canceled, as well as hospital and government services.

For its part, the United States embassy in Mexico asked US citizens not to travel to Sinaloa in light of the shootings in Culiacán that spread to Los Mochis and Guasave. To this, the agency recalled that Sinaloa is at level 4 “Do not travel.”
