The service of the Line 5 of the Mexico City Metro normalized its service on the afternoon of this Wednesday, January 11, after a train had to be withdrawn that required revision “due to a flat tire,” reported the Collective Transportation System (STC) on their social networks.

Users of the Subway Line 5 They shared various videos and images on social networks in which black smoke and fire are shown coming out from under one of the wagons, however, the authorities of the STC They ruled out that it was a fire.

“In the incident there was no fire and the chemical powder was applied per protocol,” the STC reported in a brief message posted on Twitter.

This incident occurred four days after the collision between two trains on Line 3 of the Metro, which left a young woman dead and 106 people injured.

The accident on Line 3, which occurred at 9:16 a.m. on January 7, is the fourth incident with human losses in the infrastructure of the Mexico City Metro that has occurred during the government of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

One of the reasons that could explain the already constant incidents in the STC is the lack of maintenance.

Between 2019 and 2021 (the most recent data available) the percentage of compliance with scheduled maintenance actions for the CDMX Metro has been significantly reduced.

In 2019, 85.7% of the scheduled maintenance activities were completed and by 2021 only 56.85% of the tasks were carried out, according to data from the Public Accounts of the Collective Transportation System.
