The Government of Mexico condemned on January 9, a online auction which includes 70 pieces and prehispanic fragments that, he assures, belong to the Mexican cultural heritage.

Therefore, the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) expressed their rejection of the sale of said patrimonial assets of Mexican origin through the online auction Moving & Estate Saleson the US sales portal AuctionNinjawhich ends on January 10, 2023.

The agencies in a joint statement noted that the pieces are parts of figurines Y vessels, anthropomorphic sculptures and vase supports, among other personal property. “They highlight fragments of anthropomorphic figurines that represent characters with headdresses and earmuffs, from the Mexican Central Highlands, dating from the Preclassic period (600 BC-200 AD),” the statement said.

Likewise, the report reported the existence of cultural assets of the style teotihuacano, Mexican Y Cholulanas well as Zapotec and Mixtec from Oaxaca, the Gulf Coast, western Mexico, and the Mata area, “in addition to a ammonite fossil with a minimum age of 70 million years.

Faced with this situation, the Secretary of Culture, Alejandra Frausto, sent a letter to the US portal AuctionNinja where he expressed his “round disapproval” of the auction, considering that it contributes to cultural dispossession and threatens the memory of the peoples.

For its part, the INAH reported that it had already filed a complaint with the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) and notified Interpol, in addition to requesting diplomatic assistance from the Legal Department of the Secretary of Foreign Relations (SRE) to carry out the steps that enable their return to the country.

It should be remembered that between 2018 and 2022, the Mexican government recovered from abroad around 9 thousand pieces that it considers national patrimony. Among the auctions that the Mexican government managed to stop, those carried out in cities such as New York, Paris and Rome stand out.

In which stolen objects appear or that belong to the patrimony of Mexico and have intensified demands before foreign governments to recover Archaeological pieces and artistic. One of the main objectives was the return to Mexico of 2 thousand 500 archaeological pieces through the Barcelona consulate.

Another of the interventions occurred in Brussels, Belgium, which led to the restitution to Mexico of several high-value pieces and the cancellation of the auction in New York with the support of the District Attorney against an auction that intended to put up for sale 16 stolen manuscripts from General Archive of the Nation of Mexico between 2014 and 2017. These cancellations were fulfilled because the sellers and owners could not prove the legal origin of what they put up for sale.

The strategy to recover the patrimony, is made up of three actions. The voluntary surrender, that is to say, to raise awareness, to insist, who have the rights of different types of collections. Second, the confiscations that are by law and third, the auction cancellation that this had not been achieved so far.

The suspension of unauthorized sales is of the utmost importance, since according to the Foreign Minister, Marcelo EbrardTraditionally, in terms of rights, Mexico had to verify that the origin of what was being auctioned was illegal. However, the process has already changed, since Mexico is the one who defends the thesis that “whoever auctions must show the legal origin of what he is selling and not the other way around.”
