Rome, Jul 4 (EFE).- Mexico expects 200,000 Italian visitors in 2024 thanks to the new air connections between Rome and Mexico City, announced the Mexican ambassador to Italy, Carlos García de Alba, in a meeting with the press.
“The new flights between Rome and Mexico City are overcrowded and are registering a higher volume of passengers than those from European capitals such as London or Paris. The success is such that it seems that next year the flow of tourists between the two countries will be a minimum of 400,000 people, 200,000 per direction,” the ambassador explained in a meeting with journalists.
The Aeroméxico company, formerly owned by the State, has been operating a daily flight since June that connects the Italian capital with Mexico City and that recovers a route that was paralyzed after the dissolution of Alitalia in 2021.
García de Alba indicated that Italy is the sixth country with the highest levels of tequila consumption thanks to a 50% increase in the last year, which raises imports to the country to 2.7 million liters per year, surpassing Australia for the first time and Canada.
At the same time, the Mexican representative announced that a “strong transversal program” will be offered next year with 18 activities that will commemorate the 150 years of diplomatic relations between Italy and Mexico, which began on December 15, 1874.
Before the event, the embassy is working on other important events such as the arrival in Naples (south) of the Mexican Navy Training Ship “Cuauhtémoc” on July 29, six years after the ship’s last stop in Italy.
During the 72-hour stop of the “Cuauhtémoc” in the port of Naples, the ship will host a meeting on July 31 between the Mexican consuls of Italy, Albania, Malta and San Marino, at a time of “changes” in the diplomatic team in this countries.
“We are looking for new profiles among the consuls, we want to make them more active because they are an essential part of the Embassy’s work. That is why the representatives in cities such as Cagliari, Terni, Palermo or Anconca were changed,” said García de Alba.
