When the cumulative update for Windows 11 was released just over a week ago, not everything went as it should, because the KB5026372 update has caused numerous problems since then. This includes slow VPN speeds, and Microsoft is now investigating that.

Specifically, these are problems with L2TP/IPsec-based Virtual Private Networks (VPN). Users of such VPN connections have been complaining about significantly slower speeds since KB5026372. How Bleeding computer reported, the problem may even have existed since April, as the first reports of such problems have appeared with the optional update KB5025305.

Apparently, both updates are causing connection problems of this kind, which is also confirmed by reports from admins: “There are no problems connecting to the VPN, but once you’re in, the speeds are extremely slow and RDP basically just drops out. A A quick web search confirms that KB5025305 is causing L2TP/IPsec VPN speed issues,” reads one post Reddit.

Strange things about the VPN bug

Some admins also report “oddities”, according to which a handful of users they support get full speed, while most of them drop to a fraction of what they should be able to achieve. Microsoft has meanwhile also confirmed these problems to Bleeping Computer, saying that they are “aware of this problem and are investigating it,” the Redmond company said. There is no workaround for this bug so far, the only thing that helps is uninstalling the update – we already described how this works last week. If you do that, however, it means that you have to do without any important security fixes, since Microsoft bundles them in updates.

Summary

  • Microsoft is investigating issues with KB5026372 causing slow VPN speeds.
  • KB5025305 could be causing problems since April.
