Microsoft has released a security update for the Edge web browser. The update is strongly recommended for all users as it fixes a vulnerability that makes the browser vulnerable to manipulation. The new version number is 109.0.1518.78.

If you use the Edge, you simply get the update as an auto update. The latest Edge version has the number 109.0.1518.78 and is already available in our WinFuture download center and can be downloaded at the end of this article.

According to Microsoft, Edge users should install the update as soon as possible. The damage potential is classified as moderate – partly because exploitation is considered less likely. As far as is currently known, the vulnerability is not actively exploited.

Edge specific issue

The vulnerability is an Edge-specific issue, so the update is out of order and unrelated to the security updates that Google is releasing for Edge’s Chromium underpinning. Microsoft writes the following about the vulnerability and update: “Microsoft has released the latest Microsoft Edge Stable Channel (version 109.0.1518.78) which integrates the latest security updates from the Chromium project. For more information, see the security update guide. This update contains the following Microsoft Edge-specific update: CVE-2023-21720.” Details of the update were not given. In which Security update guide you can currently only find the list of CVE entries for the fixed vulnerabilities.

At Microsoft you can see this overview and the CVE articles in the Edge update history follow up. Further details on security gaps are usually only published after a few days or even weeks.
