Miss Universe 2023 cannot return to Nicaragua

MEXICO CITY.- The director of the organization miss UniverseAnne Jakrajutatip, reported that the young Nicaraguan Sheynnis Palacios, crowned world beauty queen six months ago, and her family live in indefinite exile due to the cruel intentions of Daniel Ortega’s government in Nicaragua.

In a letter published on the occasion of Mother’s Day, which was celebrated this Sunday in the United States, the Thai businesswoman confirmed that Palacios’ family recently emigrated from Nicaragua.

You work hard to take care of your mother and the entire family who are now outside your homeland, he indicated.

“You are one of the greatest examples of the butterfly girl with broken wings who never surrendered to the bad actions, disrespectful and cruel intentions of any authoritarian, added Jakrajutatip in apparent allusion to the Ortega government.

The young 23-year-old communicator is touring the world as part of her reign. Although she has never said that she is in exile, she cries bitterly when she is given a Nicaraguan flag or when she meets her Nicaraguan friends.

Miss Universe’s family leaves Nicaragua

Nicaraguan media revealed last month that Palacios’ grandmother and brother left the country quietly and arrived in the United States after applying for humanitarian parole, in order to meet with Raquel Cornejo, mother of the young Miss Universe 2023, resident in California. Palacios did not confirm the news.

In his letter, Jakrajutatip also addressed Karen Celebertti, the former Nicaraguan model who managed the Miss Nicaragua franchise for 23 years, whom he congratulated for having achieved the first Miss Universe in her country.

Also in his case, he said that the local leadership of Nicaragua exiled all members of his family, including the queen, out of the country indefinitely.

Palacios’ surprise victory in the Miss Universe pageant, held in El Salvador last November, unleashed an explosion of joy in the streets of Nicaragua that caused discomfort in the Ortega government, since demonstrations have been prohibited in the Central American country since the social revolt. 2018. The current beauty queen participated in those protests, according to photos that Palacios herself published then on her social networks and later deleted.

After this spontaneous popular reaction, the police arrested two young artists who were painting a mural with Palacios’ face in the city of Estel (north), who are in prison and in February were sentenced to five years in prison.

Likewise, the Government prevented the entry into the country of Karen Celebertti, who was stranded in Mexico, and days later arrested her husband and son, and accused them of organized crime, money laundering and other charges also attributed to her.

After spending almost two months in detention, Celebertti’s relatives were released from prison and expelled to Mexico last January. Days before, the director of Miss Nicaragua had announced her withdrawal from the franchise. She currently works as Talent Director of Miss Universe.

So far, no one in the Central American country has bought back the Miss Nicaragua franchise, and it is assumed that the pageant will not take place this year. The Ortega government, meanwhile, announced its own contest called Queens of Nicaragua, for which it has already registered more than 1,100 candidates, according to official media.
