Many celebrities will enter the music hall of fame in 2023 at a ceremony scheduled for November 2, 2023 in New York.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, pantheon of music, has just announced its 2023 vintage. This year artists Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners will be inducted into the “Performers” category.

This award is intended for artists who have “created music whose originality, impact and influence have changed the course of rock & roll”, specifies the institution in a press release.

“It’s something I never thought possible. Thank you very much to everyone who voted for me. It means a lot that you are thinking of me. It’s a great honor”, reacted Kate Bush in particular in the magazine columns Rolling Stone.

To be eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, artists must have released their first record 25 years prior to their nomination. The induction ceremony will be held on Friday, November 3, 2023 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

First female rapper inducted

This year, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is making a point of honoring hip-hop culture. Among the nominees, the author-composer and producer Missy Elliott, thus becomes the first rapper to enter the pantheon of music.

“It’s an important distinction, not just for me, but for all of my sisters in hip-hop, that door is now open for us to show our hard work and what so many of us bring to music.” , reacted Missy Elliott on Twitter.

DJ Kool Herc, a Jamaican-American disc jockey considered one of the pioneers of hip-hop music in the Bronx, is also nominated in the category of the “musical influence award”.

This award recognizes “artists whose music and performance style have directly influenced, inspired and evolved rock & roll and music with an impact on youth culture”, specifies the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Open to other musical genres

Even if its name may suggest otherwise, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has never been reserved solely for rock and has opened up, since its first promotion in 1986, to other musical genres, soul, blues, R&B, folk, country, then rap.

In the past, many non-rock artists have been inducted, such as rappers Eminem and Jay-Z, country star Dolly Parton, singer Tina Turner, German band Kraftwerk and synthpop pioneers Eurythmics.
