Napoli had the opportunity to secure the title as Italian champions when the team faced Salernitana at home at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Napoli, who have not won the Italian league since 1990 during Diego Maradona’s glory days, were helped earlier on Sunday by Inter Milan, who beat second-placed Lazio 3-1. A Napoli win would have secured the title.
Napoli took the lead thanks to Mathias Oliveira just after half-time, but the visitors equalized in the 84th minute to spoil the party in Naples.
The “Scudetton” can still be decided this evening when league third-placed Juventus meets Bologna away from home. If Juventus loses points, Napoli are champions.
