Toenisvorst

Important visit to action medeor: Mona Neubaur, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, recently visited the health organization in Tönisvorst to get an idea of the current aid projects. During a tour of the medicine warehouse, Neubaur found out more about the aid deliveries for the earthquake areas in Syria and Turkey and the ongoing emergency aid for the Ukraine. But so-called “forgotten crises” were also discussed, such as those currently occurring in Yemen, South Sudan, Malawi and Somalia. Thousands of people there suffer from hunger, drought, floods and war without the world public taking much notice. action medeor also helps these people in need with its donations.

Accompanied by Members of Parliament Meral Thoms and Britta Oellers, Mona Neubaur learned that since the Russian attack on Ukraine, action medeor has sent an average of four aid transports a week to the war-torn country. Since February last year, more than 200 transports with around 540 tons of aid worth more than 10 million euros have been sent to Ukraine. action medeor is also active with humanitarian aid programs in the regions of Odessa, Mykolaiv and Cherson. The relief measures were also supported with funds from the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia.

action medeor also got involved in earthquake aid for people in Turkey and Syria very early on. action medeor launched the first aid activities just a few hours after the earthquake. By working together with local aid organizations, it was possible to reach and take care of the people in both the Turkish and Syrian earthquake regions at an early stage. The Tönisvorst relief organization, together with its local partners, is now organizing the distribution of water, hygiene items and hot meals for thousands of people affected by the earthquake. In addition, mobile medical teams were formed to visit and treat people in the tent cities.

Mona Neubaur, Deputy Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia: “I am deeply impressed by the tireless commitment of the employees here on site for the people in Ukraine and the earthquake areas in Syria and Turkey, but also in other regions affected by crises. The work from action medeor is an impressive example of how we in North Rhine-Westphalia can help people in need together and in solidarity. We will continue to support your humanitarian contribution so that the help gets to where it is needed.”

President Siegfried Thomassen expressed his gratitude for action medeor: “Mona Neubaur’s visit shows once again the attention, appreciation and support with which the state of North Rhine-Westphalia accompanies our work. That makes us happy and grateful. At the same time, we see it as a further incentive not to let up in our efforts to help those in need.”
