Juarez City.- More people in the municipality of Juárez said they felt unsafe in public places such as public transportation, ATMs and banks in the first quarter of 2023, compared to the previous quarter, according to results from the National Survey of Urban Public Safety (ENSU) of the Institute National Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The one that presented the most change in its percentage was the public transport option, which in December 2022 seemed unsafe to 76.2 percent of the population, but in March 2023 the figure rose to 83.9 percent.

Compared to the municipality of Chihuahua (the other city in this federal entity monitored by Inegi for this survey), 48.8 percent of the capital’s inhabitants feel that their public transportation is unsafe, according to March data.

The safest place for those who inhabit this city is, on the other hand, the school (for 91.7 percent of the people who attend one). They are followed by the house (safe for 79.7 percent), work (67 percent) and their own car (60.8).

Places such as shopping malls, parks and recreational centers, markets, and banks are beginning to become unsafe places for citizens.

After public transport and ATMs on public roads, the city streets are the spaces that seem most unsafe to citizens with a percentage of 67.3 percent, followed by the highway, with 63.9 percent.

On the other hand, the residents of Juarez have seen fewer crimes in their surroundings in the January-March 2023 quarter, compared to October-December 2022. Alcohol consumption in the streets, robberies, vandalism, sale or consumption of drugs and hearing shots were seen less by border citizens, while the only indicator that rose was that of observing irregular electricity intakes, which went from 15.1 to 20.3 percent of the people who said they had witnessed it.

In these indicators, the ones with the lowest drops were witnessing alcohol use (46 percent in March 2023) and drug use (26.6 percent).
