More than 100,000 Cubans have migrated to the US with humanitarian parole

HAVANA.- A total of 106,757 Cubans have benefited from the humanitarian parole program implemented in January 2023 by the Joe Biden administration, according to the most recent report from the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP). Of this total, 104,130 have traveled to the United States and have received parole under this process, from the beginning of the program until the end of June 2024.

Overall, according to review Marti Newsthe CPB reported that some 494,799 people from four countries have legally arrived at U.S. ports on commercial flights under this policy, which allows two-year stays provided they have financial sponsors. These migrants include 194,027 Haitians, 86,101 Nicaraguans and 110,541 Venezuelans.

Meanwhile, irregular migration of Cubans to U.S. territory did not stop in June, although there was a slight decrease in the entry of Caribbeans across the border, according to the CBP report. This month, 17,563 Cubans entered the country, some 1,171 fewer than in May, when 18,934 migrants from the island arrived in the U.S.

Last April, thousands of people who applied for parole received “non-confirmation” notices for their cases. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) explained that this was a system update.

“USCIS recently made a technical change to more quickly inform applicants if they have been determined eligible to support beneficiaries of humanitarian parole proceedings. As a result, USCIS sent a high volume of nonconfirmation notices,” a spokesperson for the federal agency said at the time.

Immigration attorney Angel Leal recommends that those who receive a parole denial reapply. “My recommendation is that, since the program is still in place, they reapply, and that they focus on the humanitarian reason, in addition to reinforcing the sponsor’s income.”
