More trouble than gain: Uber driver recounts his experience with a rental car

Maritza Flores decided to rent a car to work as an Uber driver. But her experience left him with more trouble than gain.

It all started in January, when he went to the Hertz company to rent the vehicle. Almost immediately, the battery failed.

“The first day, the first trip I was taking in Uber, the car completely left me on the street,” Flores recalls.

A woman believed her vehicle insurance had been canceled because of her age

The next day, says Flores, he had to take it to Pep Boys, a workshop that offers service to Hertz vehicles, to repair it. However, the problems continued.

“The breaks. It had no brakes! (There were) many complications and in the end, I decided to change the car,” says Flores.

He thought that this would solve the problems but he was wrong.

“I changed cars and the other (was) the same!”, he recalls.

Had to take it in for an oil change. And although he acknowledges that the service was paid for by Hertz. he did not get credit for the day missed.

“I had to go out until 7 at night, from 9 in the morning,” says Flores. (Working from) 4, 5 in the afternoon, it was practically losing the day of work”.

His insurance company had confirmed that he had been reimbursed for the deductible. However, two months after the accident, he had received no response from them. She called them and sent them an email.

With the third vehicle they gave him, he assures that the light that indicates engine problems came on.

“Was a beep that it was not tolerated and the clients were scared”, says Flores.

Flores assures that, although they changed his car for another, the agency never wanted to credit him for the day, but rather he paid double.

Telemundo 52 Responde investigates the case of a man who alleges that he rented a vehicle online, but then when he arrived in Mexico, he assures that they wanted to charge him more than $1,000 for international insurance.

“I told them that I was tired of taking cars for maintenance because that was the company’s responsibility,” says Flores.

Telemundo 52 Responde asked Hertz to evaluate Flores’ case.

“Our rideshare program allows vehicles to be rented for extended periods and we strive to help our customers stay on the road during their rentals by performing routine and preventative maintenance on all of our vehicles,” Hertz responded in a statement.

Hertz says it will pay approximately $168 million by the end of the year to settle most of the lawsuits filed against the car rental company by some of its customers who were wrongly accused of stealing cars they had rented.

“Should maintenance on a vehicle need to be completed for an extended period of time, we provide the customer with a replacement vehicle so that it can stay on the road.”

Based on the experience that Maritza Flores lived, they informed her that they would make an exception and provide her with a partial refund of $215, equivalent to 4 days of rent.

Although she was not very satisfied with the resolution, she encouraged her to advise other people not to hesitate to report it if they were to face a similar case.

“Because the more people we do it, the better service they will provide,” advises Flores.

Finally, he decided to buy a vehicle to continue working as an Uber driver. She assures that, financially, the investment turned out to be a better option for her.
