The next Mortal Kombat movie should soon enter production and a very popular actor at the moment, would have been approached to play the role of the confusing Johnny Cage.
While good old Ed Boon continues to annoy fans by teasing Mortal Kombat 12, on the cinema side, things also seem to be moving for the saga. We’ve known it for a while, Mortal Kombat 2 is on track and should be launched soon. Despite a lackluster reception, the 2021 film was a minor hit. At the very least, it was enough for a sequel to be ordered. And if we don’t know much about the film itself, it could well be that one of the stars of the series The Boys or travel.
A bit of the Boys in my Mortal Kombat
It was our colleagues from New Line who spilled the beans. Karl Urban, the legendary Butcher that we will find in season 4 of The Boys on Prime Video, would be in full negotiation to camp the role of Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. Moreover, the deal is about to be validated. The New Zealand actor already has a very long career behind him. In addition to his role in the Amazon show mentioned above, he was notably able to be seen in the saga of Lord of the Ringsin the last trilogy Star Trek or in the movies Thor of the MCU. Generally considered an excellent second knife in most feature films, Urban also had the right to its heyday as in the very honest Dredd of 2012.
Moreover, he has already participated in the film adaptation of a cult video game franchise in 2005 with the bad DOOMalso worn by Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock.
Who is Johnny Cage?
Karl Urban as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2 could therefore be a reality. A role that would fit him like a glove on paper. Cage is indeed a rather funny character who masters different martial arts. Always in the valve, even his Fatalies are real sketches, like his signature uppercut, the “Nut Punch”. A direct in the parts underlined by a large gap just for the class. In franchise lore, Johnny Cage is an action movie star who finds himself drawn into the tournament and ends up being among those who save the Earthrealm time and time again. In the games, Cage even has a romance with the beautiful Sonya Blade with whom he will have a daughter, Cassie. All three are also playable in the latest games of the franchise. Cage is one of the oldest heroes in the saga Mortal Kombat and one of the most popular. He will eventually become a very important character for the lore, able to stand up to many powerful antagonists. He will even help special forces, and the gods themselves, on several occasions.
Mortal Kombat, a universe that big? (spoiler alert)
As for the movie Mortal Kombat 2, we still do not know what he will tell us. But if we are to believe the open end of the first opus, we should finally have the right to the famous bloody tournament. As a reminder, in the Mortal Kombat license, the tournament is what maintains order in the universe. Six main kingdoms share the world and its different planes and all are watched over by the Elder Gods, omnipotent entities who never interfere with the balance of the worlds. They still imposed a rule that is (normally) impossible to avoid: if a kingdom wishes to declare war on another, then it must win Mortal Kombat several times in a row.
In the last film, you can imagine, there is only one chance left for the Earth Kingdom to win the tournament, under penalty of being invaded by an army of demons. That’s why Lord Raiden and the whole gang set out to recruit champions around the world.
According to Simon McQuoid the director of the last film Mortal Kombat, which should also stack for the second, this new franchise could become a real extended universe. If the call of the MCU-like is tempting and could well stick with the license, it is still necessary that success be there. And for that, we will have to wait for the next feature film to get to the bottom of it.
