For five years, Mozilla Firefox consumed too much CPU resources on Windows computers. This was a bug that has just been fixed by Microsoft. Better late than never as the saying goes.

Far behind Chrome and Safari, Mozilla Firefox is trying somehow to hold its own in the web browser market. The resolution of a long-standing problem should allow him to grab a few more users. Rather focused on the concerns of the most popular browsers, Microsoft has finally set out to solve a particularly problematic bug that affected Firefox users on Windows, all versions combined.

This caused a much too intensive consumption of the CPU. Just compare with competing browsers to see that something is wrong. On Chrome and Microsoft Edge, resource usage is noticeably lower than on Firefox. In a graph, Neowin thus reveals the average use of the processor when reloading YouTube six times. We can see that the peaks are much higher on Firefox.

Mozilla Firefox: Microsoft finally fixes the performance problem on Windows PCs

The problem was directly related to the Antimalware Service Executable program of Windows Defender, the native antivirus present on the different versions of the Microsoft operating system. Hence the fact that all users (Windows 7,8, 10, 11) of Firefox have been affected by this excessive consumption of CPU resources.

Developer at Firefox, Yannis Juglaret has confirmed that all users will be able to take advantage of the patch, including users who are still on Windows 7 and 8 despite the end of support. This is good since we just learned that Mozilla Firefox will continue to support Windows 7 and 8 at least until 2024. It could even be that the browser continues support beyond that. This decision will depend on the number of users and organizations that will still need it.

As a reminder, Mozilla Firefox has just refined its Relay security extension. This very practical feature allows you to create disposable email addresses referring to your main inbox.
