Twitter is again increasing the character limit for tweets – but only for paying users. Twitter Blue subscribers are now able to publish up to 10,000 characters at once – the network once started with 140 characters.

Short and sweet, reduced to the “essential” – that’s how the message that could be sent via Twitter was intended at the very beginning of the service. Eventually the limit was doubled to 280 and those who had more say simply did so in the form of threads.

Now there is a new change for the character limit. That doesn’t come as a complete surprise. Twitter boss Elon Musk announced in early March that he will “make long tweets even longer”. Also not surprising: the new test length should attract more payment customers for the Twitter Blue subscription.

Long, bold and italics

The company has more than doubled the previous limit of 4,000 characters (only usable as a Twitter Blue customer) and is now offering support for tweets with a length of up to 10,000 characters. In addition, the site now supports bold and italic text formatting, allowing content creators to use these elements to break up potentially large blocks of text. With the long tweets, Twitter has targeted a relatively new target group: users who want to earn money with their posts. The company recently rebranded “Super Follows” to “Subscriptions,” allowing users to charge $3, $5, and $10 a month for exclusive content, including chats in subscriber-only Spaces. 100 percent of the revenue goes to the users. Twitter had declared that it would not withhold any of the earnings as commission for at least the next 12 months.
