Significant increase in costs for consultations in the Ministry of the Interior: Left Party criticizes: Benefits hardly play a role for consumers.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) has already spent around 1.3 million euros on external advice in the current legislative period. This emerges from a small request from the left, which is available to this editorial team. Since October 26, 2021, the Ministry of the Interior has paid 1,304,741.82 euros to external consulting firms.

The ministry under Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has already reached a similar amount after less than half of the current legislative period as in the entire previous legislative period under Horst Seehofer (CSU). The largest cost items included advice on supporting the founding process of a data institute in Germany and an accompanying study on the same subject. The expenses for both consultations were over 500,000 euros.

1.3 million for consultants: Left criticizes the Ministry of the Interior

The left has criticized the level of payments for external advice. “In core tasks of public administration, the BMI must finally be able to develop its own strategies without a consultant,” said Martina Renner, MP for the left. Above all, she complained about the high consulting costs for setting up a data institute. “It’s not possible for consulting firms to ask other consultants how they imagine a data institute that primarily serves the interests of the data economy,” says Renner. It is also not clear which tasks this data institute should have at all. “The benefit for the citizens obviously plays no role.” (csr)
