neighbors on alert for cleaning work in the west canal / the day

Neighbors and environmental organizations raised the dangers that soil removal and cleaning work on the West Canal can generate in Ensenada. From the Municipality of that district it was indicated that “the works that are carried out are for the benefit of the environment” and for “better water runoff.”

According to the residents, “in a sector close to the bridge that crosses the West canal at the height of Bossinga street, municipal machinery, including backhoes and a floating backhoe, are carrying out extraction and removal of mud from the bed in addition to profiling from the margins. The mud from the bed of the canal has a significant amount of heavy metals that are confined to the bottom and removing them causes a negative environmental impact for the waters that flow into the Santiago River canal,” they stated in Ensenada.

For their part, from the NGO Nuevo Ambiente they indicated “the machines that are working remove this mud and load it into trucks from the municipality itself to make the final disposal in a sector of Ensenada where the ground is currently being raised.”

Councilors who question the works affirm that “there is a clear breach of provincial legislation.”

Meanwhile, from the Municipality of Ensenada it was reported that “the necessary and mandatory works are being carried out by the Municipality on the West canal, to guarantee the runoff of water. It is one of the alleviators of the water that it receives from La Plata as from the rain” and they added that “the work is a necessity for the city of Ensenada and the hydraulic system of the region, as well as for the care of the environment and the life of the Ensenadenses. The work caused the mud to gather in the area of the concrete posts that were placed. The objective of the work is that the water can drain easily”.
