Goodyear presented a novelty during CES 2023 that could cause a real revolution in the tire market: a compound made of 90% sustainable materials, capable of running up to 500,000 km in its useful life.

The new formula crafted by the manufacturer has 17 ingredients in 12 different tire components, including carbon black, sunflower oil, pine resin, natural rubber (used to replace synthetic rubber, which is derived from petroleum), polyester recycled from bottles and silica from ash from rice husks.

The concept, named Eagle Go, was shown for the first time at the beginning of October 2022, wearing the wheels of the Citroën Oli. However, only now, in January, did the company release an official statement celebrating that the 90% sustainable tire is ready for use, after having passed “all applicable regulatory tests, as well as Goodyear’s internal tests”.

Goodyear wants 100% sustainable tires by 2030

Chris Helsel, senior vice president of global operations and chief technology officer at Goodyear, projected the arrival of a new model of ecologically correct tire in stores still in 2023, but with the use of 70% of sustainable material.

The manufacturer’s next step is to develop a tire made from 100% sustainable materials. And the prediction for this to happen is not that far away in the executive’s view.

According to Helsel, the successful demonstration of the tire shows that it is possible to offer greater fuel economy and a reduction in the carbon footprint. “We continue to make progress towards our goal of introducing the first 100% sustainable tire to the industry by 2030,” he warned.
