Formula 1 is to immediately review its routines after an incident during the Azerbaijan GP. Photographers and mechanics ran in front of the pit entrance while the race was still going on and Esteban Ocon was going to do a tire change.

The incident occurred during the final lap of Sunday’s race as Alpine driver Esteban Ocon was heading into the pits for a tire change.

The local organizer had already let a number of mechanics, journalists and photographers into the pit and it could have gone really badly when Ocon turned in.

– It was lucky that there were no serious consequences from what happened, says a spokesman for the international motor sports association FIA, according to Reuters.

Fia must now take immediate measures to review the routines and ensure that something similar does not happen again. It should happen in good time before the next race, which is in Miami on Sunday.

Ocon: It’s crazy

Ocon called the whole thing a scary incident that could have ended in disaster.

– I don’t understand why they started preparing for the award ceremony while the competition was still going on. There was one lap left and drivers who had not entered the pits.

– I braked very late and I only see the wall and people around. It’s crazy and could have gone very badly, says Ocon.

The Frenchman also says that he almost ran over the people who were running across the pit entrance.

– I had to ease off the gas. If I had missed my braking point, it would have been a big disaster, he says.
