sonos will launch new speakers. This was already known through a leak last year, but Sonos CEO Patrick Spence has confirmed that there is a lot in the pipeline.
The US medium The Verge, which was able to report on the upcoming speakers last year, is now posting again after and reports that upcoming speaker types will be called Era 100 and Era 300 and it is also known that Sonos has a second generation move in the works.
A side note in advance: a new move sounds good, because purely in terms of handling, I think the Roam is actually better than the move of the first generation. It never really worked satisfactorily in the mix for me and was portable.
The speakers, which The Verge previously described under the codename Optimo, will be pitted against Apple’s $349 HomePod and other smart home speakers from Google and Amazon line up The flagship Era 300 is designed to showcase spatial audio tunes and Dolby Atmos content. Both speakers have a completely new design compared to existing Sonos products.
According to the report, the Era 300 features a completely newly developed acoustic design and will be the offer the best sound quality of any speaker ever released by Sonos. Not only is the Era 300 better suited for immersive spatial audio tunes, but it will likely offer a USB-C input, Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and possibly Bluetooth playback too.
Less is known about the Era 100, but it’s likely that an Era 100 SL (without built-in speech mics) will also be part of the 2023 Sonos lineup. That could be a Sonos One successor that comes with Dolby Atmos drivers – a missing element in the company’s home theater portfolio that Sonos fans have long been asking for.
Let’s see what’s coming. Having used Sonos since 2011, I’m probably one of the few who would rather use the company’s app than the controls I have to use for an Echo or HomePod. Should one of the manufacturers follow suit, it will be extremely difficult for Sonos – at least in my household.
