The Toyota Prius continues to impress after the launch of the 5th generation. The most famous hybrid of the Japanese automaker is now plug-in, that is, it can have its battery recharged at an outlet. With this technology, the sedan has achieved absurdly good consumption figures, approaching 200 km/l.

When we first tested the Prius here at Canaltech, it was still in its fourth generation, lacking the plug-in hybrid option that already existed in other markets. During this evaluation period, we reached averages of 20 km/l, which is already very good when it comes to a conventional hybrid.

The new Prius, however, far surpasses that number. According to Toyota, the 5th generation of the sedan managed to reach averages of 200 km/l, or 0.5l per 100km. And all this being much more powerful and technological when compared to previous models.

These averages, of course, were obtained in very specific situations and will almost never be the reality in daily use, which should approach around 35 km/l, according to the automaker itself revealed at the launch of the car a few weeks ago. With its 13.6 kWh battery, the Prius can run up to 95 km in purely electric mode and exceed 1,000 km when adding the range with the gas tank.

The mechanical set that equips the new generation of Toyota Prius, by the way, is the most powerful and fastest in its history. Now it is equipped with a 2.0 aspirated gasoline engine on the front axle that yields 148hp and an electric one on the rear axle that has 160hp. The combined power is 223hp, capable of making the sedan go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds, that is, faster than the new Honda Civic e:HEV, which covers the route in 7.8s.

Will the new Toyota Prius come to Brazil?

According to our colleague Vágner Aquino, from Jornal do Carro, Toyota has already registered the new Prius at the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property), precisely in the hybrid version and in the fifth generation.

But, in a presentation to the press that took place in 2022 and which was covered by the Canaltechthe company said it was unlikely to bring this model here because it does not consider a car that needs to be charged from the socket viable for now.
