The New York Red Bulls was left out in the round of 16 of the Leagues Cup, after losing to Philadelphia Union in a penalty shootout that ended 4-3. After equalizing in a true match 1-1 in the 90 minutes of the regulation game, with goals from Elias Manoel and Nathan Harriel.
A great three-way play in which Luquinhas and Omir Fernández participated, perfectly defined the Brazilian striker Elias Manoel, to put the New York Red Bulls up on the scoreboard.
Dante Vanzeir had a couple of good chances to extend the result for Red Bulls and had great responses from goalkeeper Andre Blake.
The Union began its reaction in the second half, supported by the large number of people who attended Subaru Park in Philadelphia.
The locals got a reward for their insistence in the 68th minute, thanks to a header from Nathan Harriel after a very good cross from Kai Wagner.
From that moment the game became dizzying until minute 95. Thus, Philadelphia Union and New York Red Bulls equalized 1-1 and had to solve the pass to the quarterfinals of the Leagues Cup through shots from the penalty spot.
Dramatic penalty shootout
It was the second game of its kind for the Union, who also went to penalties in their win over DC United in the Leagues Cup round of 16.
In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Andre Blake gave Union a great start, diving to his right to stop a try from Lewis Morgan of the Red Bulls. While Jack Elliott beat goalkeeper Carlos Coronel to put the Union ahead 1-0 after one round.
The Red Bulls’ second attempt was converted by Franuel Amaya. Mikael Uhre then smashed the ball into Coronel’s fingertips but still scored, keeping the Union ahead 2-1.
Neither team found the back of the net in the third round. Daniel Edelman crashed the Red Bulls’ attempt off the crossbar. While Jack McGlynn’s shot was saved by Coronel. For their part, in the fourth and fifth rounds, both teams scored their penalties.
Venezuelan midfielder Jesús Bueno was in charge of scoring Union’s last penaltywhich sealed the pass to the next round for the club from ‘the City of Brotherly Love’.
They face Querétaro
Querétaro is the sensation team of the Leagues Cup. Not only for what encompasses Mexican soccer, but for the entire tournament in general, counting the Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs.
His last feat came against the New England Revolution, one of the most solid teams in MLSsecond place in their conference, only behind Cincinnati FC and well led by Bruce Arena.
After a goal equality in the ninety minutes of play, the Mexican team took the victory thanks to a phenomenal performance by their goalkeeper Fernando Tapia, who blocked the last two New England penalties.
Now in the quarterfinals of the Leagues Cup there will be an interesting confrontation between Philadelphia Union and Querétaro on Friday, August 11for the pass to the semifinals where they will face off against the winner of the series between Inter Miami against Charlotte FC.
